Children

  • Impact San Diego
    Where: San Diego, CA
    When: April 11, 2010
    Over 700 people participated in seven projects to provide services for education projects, environmental clean ups, classroom renovations, creating health kits, supporting the elderly and the homeless population.

  • SOS-Serve our Schools 2011
    Where: McAllen , TX
    When: September 17, 2011
    Over 500 volunteers gathered in response to an S.O.S. call from local schools, suffering from extreme budget cuts. Activities included landscaping, library work, painting, filing/organizing, cleaning, and organzing book collections. Coordinators hope that this volunteer spirit will continue to serve schools throughout the school year. Twelve schools were served in this event, impacting approximately 9000 children.

  • Celebrate Segundo Barrio 2011
    Where: El Paso, TX
    When: March 12, 2011
    The Lydia Patterson Institute, in partnership with 6 local UM Churches, several Campus Ministries and the State of Texas, held a day of cultural celebration and service in what is known as the poorest urban zip code in America. Historical tours, food box distributions and a free health fair, along with a 5K Walk/Run, served over 2000 people in the community.
  • Hope Epidemic
    Where: Sikeston, MO
    When: April 30, 2011
    One thousand volunteers brought hope to their community during a flood crisis. Projects included sandbagging, moving people out of their homes, delivering needed supplies and giving away 500 flood buckets.
    The day was concluded with a Hopefest Celebration inviting a hurting community out for free food, health screenings and haircuts!

Education


  • SOS-Serve our Schools 2011

Environment

  • Hands Across the City
    Where: Grand Rapids, MI
    When: August 7, 2010
    On one day, 650 volunteers came together to serve 56,000 people! Volunteers showed up at Garfield Park to build a new KaBoom! playground and others helped out by sprucing up other parks by painting, raking and weeding.
    In all, 12 city parks were impacted in 3 hours on one day.
  • Hands on Topeka 2010
    Where: Topeka, KS
    When: April 11, 2010
    With over 900 volunteers from the community and 20 UM churches, 12 city parks were serviced with trash pick-up, recycling, leaf raking, trimming of bushes, etc., providing a cleaner safer place for children and families.
  • Hands on Topeka 2011
    Where: Topeka, KS
    When: May 1, 2011
    In its 2nd year, Hands On Topeka held another community-wide effort providing a cleaner and safer environment in 12 of Topeka’s city parks. A partnership of 23 churches, the Campus Ministry at Washburn University and the community provided a workforce of over 850 volunteers.

Health

  • Get up and Give
    Where: Little Rock, AR
    When: April 11, 2010
    On April 11, 2010, Arkansans gathered to collect donations and provide needed services for the Methodist Children’s Home, the Behavioral Hospital, local clinics and schools. The event attracted a total of 275 volunteers to complete service projects like landscaping, clothes collection and sorting for children and families.
  • Hopefest
    Where: Park Ridge, IL
    When: September 11, 2011
    Hopefest began with a memorial commemoration of the day and dedication of a 6 foot i-beam from the World Trade Center, donated to the city, and continued with service opportunities at sites throughout the area. Projects included multi-site blood drives, food pantry collections, emergency CPR and disaster preparedness classes and a free kids fair.

  • Impact JC 2010
    Where: Johnson City, TN
    When: September 11, 2010
    Even in the pouring rain, over 250 church and community members came together to fix up the community and to honor all those who died nine years ago during the September 11th attacks.
    Through home repairs, park beautification, a blood drive and food boxes, Impact JC was able to honor local military service members and their families.

    A variety of projects brought out over 300 volunteers for the 2nd annual Impact JC day in Johnson City, TN. With 19 different locations throughout Johnson City, the teams of volunteers were able to impact a large population of the city in many different ways. They are already looking ahead to an event in 2012!
  • Mt. Pleasant Community Health Fair 2011
    Where: Mt. Pleasant, TX
    When: October 15, 2011
    United Methodist Churches and community volunteers joined hands and hearts to offer a free community health fair on Saturday, October 15th. Flu shots, health screenings, information booths, and healthy food samples were offered. All services and lunch were provided at no cost to the community.

Homeless

  • A Kalamazoo Christmas 2010
    Where: Kalamazoo, MI
    When: December 19, 2010
    Proving you don’t have to be big to do mighty works, a small membership church was able to lead 300 volunteers to serve 1200 guests on one day with a hot meal, warm clothing, blankets, and Christmas toys for their children.
    Over 34 corporate sponsors and 4 branches of local law enforcement helped support this successful annual event.

Hunger

    Where: Southwest Oklahoma (8 counties)
    When: November 6, 2010
    Volunteers across eight Oklahoma counties gathered to impact hunger their communities.
    Through their efforts to combat hunger they were able to gather 2 tons of food for the Lawton Food Bank.
  • Celebrate Community Day
    Where: Omaha, NE
    When May 14, 2011
    On Saturday, May 14th, volunteers engaged in service in the Metro-Omaha area. This event linked volunteers to local community agencies such as community gardens, food and clothing pantries, and shelters.
    Along the way participants learned about neighborhoods and agencies that are making a lasting difference in the community.
  • Hands4NY 2011
    Where: Upper NY Conference-wide
    When: October 15, 2011 and year round
    In Upstate New York over 800,000 people -- 14% of all residents -- do not have enough food to meet their needs, and the number of people who are hungry is rising. In a year-long effort to feed 1 million people in 1 year, the Upper NY conference was already over halfway to their goal after their October 15th event.

    Six churches in five rural western Kentucky towns held a community event with 336 volunteers completing over 44 projects in one day.
    Multi-theme focused, this effort, though small on scale, seemed to have had big results with the churches that participated and the communities that were served.

    When: September 11, 2010
    Even in the pouring rain, over 250 church and community members came together to fix up the community and to honor all those who died nine years ago during the September 11th attacks.
    Through home repairs, park beautification, a blood drive and food boxes, Impact JC was able to honor local military service members and their families.

    When: Sept. 10-11, 2011
    Two Hundred and seventy-four. churches hosting 261 projects were able to bring together approximately 21,000 volunteers to serve over 100,000 people in need over the weekend of September 10-11.

    Where: 15 districts conference-wide
    When: June 5, 2010
    The fifteen districts of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference in partnership with the WNC annual conference and United Methodist Communications, held individual events in their communities on June 15 over 320 projects/opportunities were sponsored, 14,600 volunteers serving 620,000 people.
  • Impact Western North Carolina 2011

    In its 2nd year, Western North Carolina was able to make an impact on their communities once again with multiple projects across the conference. From food drives, to community fairs, to delivering wood to needy families and more, the Western North Carolina conference impacted thousands.

    When: August 27, 2011
    On Saturday, August 27th, Kentuckians gathered at multiple locations across nine counties for one day of service.
    Projects included home repairs, community gardens, community-wide festivals, health fairs and food drives.

  • Rethink Poverty
    Where: Columbus, OH
    When: May 1, 2010
    Nine local churches hosted fourteen projects with a Poverty theme. Advocacy and learning workshops coupled with service projects on Poverty & Global Health, Poverty & Neighborhoods, Poverty & Africa, Poverty & Environment led off the first ever Love First Walk to support children in Poverty, ending with a rally on the Statehouse Lawn at Capitol Square.
