Impact Community: Grand Rapids, Michigan
August 7, 2010 It did not happen overnight. A well-thought out plan was created by a team of dedicated church people, who wanted to make a difference in Grand Rapids, Michigan and formed a partnership called Hands Across the City.
The partnership consisted of twenty area United Methodist churches, the City of Grand Rapids, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, KaBoom! and United Methodist Communications. Rev. Julie Dix stated, “On just one morning, in three short hours, we can rethink church, impact our community, and make a positive difference in the world God loves.” On August 7th, one day of service in Grand Rapids brought together an estimated 650 people to lend a hand to spruce up 12 city parks. City parks lost 68% of its budget and were in danger of not being maintained. The hands image became the focus for the media that helped promote the event. Lives touched: 56,000
