Building communications worldwide
Sharing information and empowering people to tell stories are essential to the church’s work in the world today.
In 2004, The United Methodist Church’s top assembly approved launching an initiative to strengthen communications in Africa, Europe and the Philippines. Since then, United Methodist Communications has held trainings, provided equipment and carried out communications audits for annual conferences around the world.
Much of the work has focused on Africa, where United Methodist Communications has established communications centers in several countries and built overseas support through partnerships with U.S. church conferences.
The church’s communications in Africa will take a major step forward with the launch of a community radio station in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Radio is an effective way of providing information to people in regions that are technologically under-served. United Methodist Communications is working on the community radio project in partnership with the Côte d’Ivoire Annual Conference, United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, and Texas Annual Conference.
Moving forward, the communications agency is focusing on new ways to gather and share content—stories, videos, photos and more—from around the globe. These are stories of faith and action, told authentically in a way that reflects the diverse cultures and people of The United Methodist Church.
