Communications Training for communicators and church leaders was and is essential for ensuring that equipment provided for the 15 new communications centers is effectively used, shared and maintained. From our site visits and communication with the central conferences, we've heard again and again that there is a need and desire for basic computer literacy, photography and videography skills.
To date, these are the communications training sessions that have been held:
Ten communicators from East and West Angola Conferences met for training at Universidade Metodista de Angola University in Luanda, Angola. Participants learned news writing, communication strategy, photography and video production/editing.
A communication training workshop was held in Riga, Latvia from Nov. 9–11, 2007 for the Nordic and the Baltic regions. This training followed a communications audit in that area in March/April 2006. The region expressed training needs in the area of Internet and desktop publication.
Nine communicators from Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya and Uganda met for training at Kyambogo University in May to learn news writing, video production and editing and writing about HIV/AIDS.
Communications training for 60 conference communicators, Christian educators, and members of the Communications and Christian Education Committee took place from Nov. 6–8 in Manila, Philippines. Participants learned about newsletter production, Web site design, basic journalism, PowerPoint and computer literacy.
Twenty-seven African communicators, representing 11 of the 12 Episcopal Areas in Africa, gathered at Africa University to receive intensive training in areas necessary for holistic conference communications: journalism; news writing; photography; videography; web design; word processing; spreadsheets; PowerPoint; newsletter design and writing; crisis communication; public relations; and communication theories, theology and practice.
Central conference bishops (mostly African bishops) and their spouses attended a technology training workshop, which included learning basic computer literacy and proficiency in word processing, e-mail, and using the Internet.
