United Methodist Communications staff honored by Religion Communicators Council

Several staff members of United Methodist Communications were recognized for excellence in religion communications and public relations in the 2015 DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards, sponsored by the Religion Communicators Council (RCC).

The award ceremony was held in Alexandria, Virginia on April 10, 2015 in conjunction with RCC’s annual meeting. The awards are named in honor of the late Victor DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, leading lithographers in New York City.

Faculty members from the Journalism and Mass Communications Department at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia honored United Methodist Communications for the following work:

  • Public Relations Materials – Brochure: Jennifer Rodia, Ashleigh Joyner, Sophia Agtarap and Sheila Harrison received an Award of Excellence for the Rethink Church brochure
  • Specialized Writing – Web: Kathy Gilbert received an Award for Ebola coverage
  • Specialized Writing – Non-Broadcast Script: Caitlin Congdon and Jennifer Rodia received an Award of Excellence for How to Rethink Church through prison ministries
  • Specialized Writing – Non-Broadcast Script: Jan Snider received an Award of Excellence for A Global Chorus
  • Graphic Design, Art and Photography – Illustration, Publication Cover: Kathleen Barry received a Certificate of Merit for Call to Live Differently
  • Graphic Design, Art and Photography – Photography, Color, Single Photo: Mike DuBose received a Certificate of Merit for Desperate Journey
  • Graphic Design, Art and Photography – Photography, Color, Series: Mike DuBose received an Award of Excellence for Global Health Initiative
  • Graphic Design, Art and Photography – Logo/Branding Development: Jennifer Rodia and Sherri Thiel received an Award of Excellence for United Methodist Brand Manual
  • Audio & Video, Broadcast, Non-broadcast & Cable - Video, Documentary/Educational: Jennifer Rodia, Ashleigh Joyner and Sophia Agtarap received an Award of Excellence for Restorative Justice: Prison Ministries
  • Audio & Video, Broadcast, Non-broadcast & Cable – Video, Promotional/Informational: Jan Snider received a Certificate of Merit for Who I Am to Be Called
  • Audio & Video, Broadcast, Non-broadcast & Cable – Video, Entertainment/Inspirational: Fran Coode Walsh and Lilla Marigza received an Award of Excellence for UMTV: Young Cancer Survivor Cares for Kids
  • Audio & Video, Broadcast, Non-broadcast & Cable – Miscellaneous: Jan Snider received a Certificate of Merit for Seeing Beauty in Sierra Leone
  • Public Relations/Advertising Campaign – Integrated Marketing Campaign: Myca Alford and Poonam Patodia received an Award of Excellence for Imagine No Malaria Advent Campaign
  • Digital Communications: Poonam Patodia, Kay Panovec, Danny Mai, Fran Walsh, Sheila Mayfield, Lane Denson, Cindy Caldwell and Laurens Glass received Best of Class and an Award of Excellence for UMC.org
  • Social Media: Myca Alford and Poonam Patodia received Best in Class and An Award of Excellence for Imagine No Malaria Advent Campaign
  • Social Media – Blog Series: Larry Hollon received an Award of Excellence for Moving Forward and Looking Back, Faith Media + Culture: Communication in the Midst of Ebola
  • Public Relations/Advertising Campaign – Integrated Marketing Campaign: Leticia F. LaFontaine received the Shoestring Award for Introducing The 2015 United Methodist Program Calendar Video

The RCC is an international interfaith association of religion communicators who work in print and electronic communication, media, marketing and public relations. RCC provides opportunities for religion communicators to learn from each other. Together, RCC members promote excellence in the communication of religions faith and values in the public arena and encourage understanding among religions and faith groups.
